FISH is a volunteer group who drive people to and from doctor and hospital appointments. Joan volunteered and worked with them for many decades.

...It would be sweet to visit; and sit to think of "Joan" and acknowledge what a blessing she was to so many people - over so many decades of volunteering .

FISH has not been active since March 2020 because of COVID-19, and the serious exposure this kind of contact would be to their volunteers. Still, they want to do a "Special Dedication" at the Helen Graham Center for Joan Irene Callaghan.

๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ซ ๐ ๐ญ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ In memory of Mary Ann & Joan, two wonderful Mothers. Mary Ann, the crochet expert and Joan who as a teacher, took good care of many children. In Joan's retirement years she took great care of many elderly with rides to Dr.'s and food delivery.
The little dolls I'm crocheting will go to the Helen Graham Cancer Center in their memory. My contact lady mentioned that if the dolls were going to a cancer center for children, it would be nice if they had "wig caps". That might help a little girl who is also bald, feel more uplifted.
So let's all say a prayer for the little child who is already going through something 'No little child should have to face. The attached pics are of crochet dolls in progress. The 2nd pic shows them with colorful "wig caps" beautifully adorning their little heads.

I just love to crochet. On Joan's birthday we dropped off a bag of hats, scarfs and socks for the men & women at Helen Graham Center. Well, tomorrow we'll donate another bag of hats, scarfs and socks; once again in honor of Joan. She did so much, it's the least we can do. We Love and miss Joan and so happy she is at rest with Our Lord.

I was so touched to hear about your kind gesture done in memory of Mom. You are right that she always wanted to find a way to be helpful. But... she definitely could NOT knit! I know she loves your idea and the comfort it brings people dealing with a tough diagnosis.

Subject: It just feels good !!!!
Family, I think of all our Loved Ones that we have lost, all the time. I enjoy crocheting because I saw how much our sister Mary Ann enjoyed it. She was good at it. Our sister Joan donated all those years, delivering meals to people in need. They were sick, or just unable to do for themselves. I wish I could drive sometimes, so I could care for the elderly in some way. Well today I had both in mind. Rich and I dropped of about twenty crocheted hats and a couple of neck scarves. Now I know how Joan felt, and why she did as much as she could. It just feels good to do what you can do to help someone. Not long ago I was sitting outside a Dr. office while Rich was in for a check-up. I was crocheting and got into a conversation with a woman. She ask how I learned to crochet and said that she wished she could crochet. It seemed like I saw her before, and said "do you walk the mall". Sure enough that is where I saw her before. I told her that I like to crochet and because I lost a sister to cancer, I donate them to the Helen Graham Cancer Center. With that she said, "I bet I have used some of your hats. She spent nine years fighting 'Breast Cancer". OMG I said, that must have been Hell. Like she said, "there were times. So for Mom, Dad and all our siblings (I can not drink) but let us all raise a glass or coffee or tea cup to them for all they did to help others. Most of all, "Thank You Mom & Dad for teaching us just how important it is and how Good it makes you feel !!!! With Love and Blessings for all you do, Rich & Susan ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐

What a true blessing and gift Joan was , I can not express how much I miss this exceptional woman who was my sister and friend and Godmother, May God watch over all of us because of your love. Hello to All,
Some months back, I received an email from Barbara Fedeler,ย who worked with Joan at FISH of Northern Delaware.ย FISH is a volunteer group who drive people to and from doctor and hospital appointments.ย Joan worked with them for decades and Barbara said they wanted to show appreciation for all she did for so many long years.ย They had lots of ideas but limited funds.ย She stayed in touch with me as the group discussed what would be an appropriate way to say thank you to her in the form of a small memorial.ย
They have placed a glider to match other outdoor furniture in the Helen Graham Center garden as a way to honor all Joan did in her work with FISH.ย Eventually they want to have a small dedication to bless the gift and publicly acknowledge her work.
FISH has not been active since March 2020 because of COVID-19, and the serious exposure this kind of contact would be to their volunteers.ย Still, they want to do a dedication at the Helen Graham Center when warmer weather permits.ย The Christiana Hospitalย will offer dates and restrictions that allow this to happen.ย They want a small group of 10 only and two of them would be FISH volunteers; another would be whoever officiates, Iโm suggesting Charlie, leaving only 7 others.ย Certainly, her children would be considered first, with a possible slot for a sibling or two or maybe not. The hospital does not want it during the lunch hours.
Someone from FISH Iโm sure would speak and I know they would want one of the children to speak about their momโs history of volunteering. Whenever, FISH is up and running again, they will put the dedication and photo in the newspaper.ย I have attached the photos of the glider that are at the Helen Graham Center with a plaque thanking your mom, grand mom, sister, aunt, friend for the kind work she did in her community.ย It would be sweet to visit; and sit to think of Joan and acknowledgeย what a blessing she was. Iโll keep you posted as plans unfold.
